Oh how we humans crave Certainty.

Our brains are wired for prediction. Because at a very basic level, being able to predict what will happen can keep us safe- prediction can keep us alive.

Think of a hot stovetop- we know that if we put our hand on it we will get burned. We can predict the outcome, so we stay safe.

So we fight for certainty at all costs. And sometimes the “cost” is not changing our lives for the better- staying “safe” by staying “same”.

We would rather stay in our same predictable present situation than take a chance on an unknown but perhaps better, more fulfilling future. Even if we are not happy where we are. It’s the “devil you know”.

We would rather be Hurtin’ than Uncertain.

In fact, research has shown that we would rather be certain that a bad event is for sure going to happen than have to manage our uncertainty.

In one study, participants who were told that they had a 50% chance of getting a low level electric shock were far more stressed than the group who were told they absolutely assured of getting shocked.

We would rather stay in a situation- a job- a relationship - that may not be serving us than take a chance on uncertainty and the possibility of a more fulfilling life.

But How do we get comfortable with uncertainty? How do we lean into trust and take a leap into the unknown? How do we push past our hard wiring?

It starts with Self-awareness. It is easier to move forward and ease up on needing to know how and what and when if you are aware that your brain is just trying to keep you safe.

Learning about yourself is powerful. Knowledge shines a light in a dark place.

Learn to embrace Uncertainty. Because uncertainty is the path to possibility. The possibility of a happiness, fulfillment, meaning and purpose.

From there-

Meditate. Journal. Breathe.

Unplug.

Observe the inherent trust there in the natural world.

Grieve the loss of identity that comes with uncertainty.

Question your beliefs- who would you be without the life you cling to?

Take small steps out of your comfort zone. Celebrate the little quiet daily wins.

And decide. Decide on the life you want.

Would you rather be Hurtin’ or Uncertain?
